Hot and cold water act the same way as hot and cold air but are easier to use for experiments. What do you think will happen when hot and cold water come together? Will they mix or will they stay separate?

1. Fill the jar 3/4 full with hot tap water.
2. Gently put one ice cube in the jar. Does the ice cube float or sink? __________
3. Watch what happens to the cold water as the ice cube melts. Record your observations and draw a sketch of what you see on the next page.
4. Empty the jar and refill it 3/4 full with hot tap water.
5. Fold the net around one ice cube and the weight and hold it shut with the twist tie. Do you think this ice cube will float or sink when you put in the jar? _____________ What do you think will happen to the colored water as this ice cube melts?
